Over five weeks, the United States, Canada, and Mexico moved millions of fans in and out of sixteen stadiums for 104 matches. In the U.S. host cities alone, the transportation operation was one of the most ambitious ever attempted on this continent — and by and large, it worked.
We spent the spring writing about the transportation challenges at these venues, one city at a time. Now that the tournament is over, it's worth being honest about what happened. Because the real lesson isn't the one the pre-tournament headlines predicted. It's more specific, more useful, and — for anyone who operates a large venue — more actionable.
Here's what the World Cup actually proved.
First, credit where it's due
The dominant pre-tournament story was that American transit couldn't handle it. The $98 NJ Transit fare from Penn Station became a national punchline. A Time reporter walked 13 miles from Manhattan to the Meadowlands to make a point about it. Officials warned of gridlock, told commuters to work from home, and braced for chaos.
The chaos mostly didn't come.

That deserves real credit. The North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority, NJ Transit, the host committees, and the local agencies pulled off a genuinely hard thing. The Turnpike Authority pre-positioned $4 million in contingency buses in case rail failed. (Time Out) Houston ran METRORail straight to NRG Park for $1.25. Miami stood up the Game Day Express from four transit hubs. Every host city built something, and most of what they built held up under the biggest crowds they'd ever faced.
The regional transit — the part everyone worried about — largely passed its test.
So where did fans still end up walking?
The gap showed up exactly where the buses stopped
Here's the detail from the tournament that tells the whole story. Sportico's reporter, riding a media shuttle toward MetLife, watched it happen in real time:

Fans abandoned their vehicles and walked the last stretch on foot. Not because the train failed. Not because the buses failed. Because the last portion of the journey — the part between where the vehicle could go and where the fan needed to be — didn't have a mode. So fans supplied their own: their legs.

The regional systems were built to solve the big distance — downtown to the stadium, airport to the stadium, hub to the stadium. They solved it. What none of them fully solved was the last distance: the stretch from the transit node, the rideshare drop, or the parking lot to the actual gate. That distance is short enough that it never gets its own vehicle, and long enough that crossing it on foot — in July heat, in a crowd of 80,000, through a reconfigured complex — is the part fans actually remember.
The exit was the tell
If the arrival stressed the system, the departure exposed it.
A Time Out reporter who paid for a private black car — the most premium, most controlled way to leave the Meadowlands — still described "a solid half hour of little to no movement to get away from the MetLife complex," in a departure that "took nearly twice as long" as the trip in. (Time Out)
Sit with that. Even the fan who did everything to buy their way out of the friction — private car, professional driver, no train, no shuttle — spent thirty minutes barely moving, just trying to clear the complex. The egress crush isn't something you can opt out of with money. It's structural. When 80,000 people leave a single footprint through a limited number of exits at the same moment, the constraint isn't the vehicle you're in. It's the space everyone shares on the way out.

Across the tournament, the same pattern held in every U.S. venue we examined.
At MetLife, no general parking, no tailgating, and no walking permitted on the surrounding highways — so every one of 80,000-plus fans arrived by a mode that stopped short of the gate, and finished the trip on foot through the complex. The regional plan was ambitious and it worked. The last stretch was still a walk.
At AT&T Stadium in Arlington — the largest U.S. city without fixed-route transit — the region built a temporary transit network from scratch, and it moved fans admirably. And they still arrived at the edge of the complex and crossed the final distance across the parking apron in Texas summer heat.
At Gillette in Foxborough, the MBTA express trains and Boston Stadium buses delivered fans to the edge of the Patriot Place complex, and the last stretch to the gate — "less than a 10-minute walk," as the MBTA accurately put it — was on foot, through a footprint most international fans had never navigated.
At Hard Rock in Miami Gardens, the free Game Day Express from four hubs was genuinely well-designed, and fans still finished on foot through the security perimeter in South Florida humidity.
At NRG Park in Houston — where the regional transit was arguably the best of any host city, a $1.25 train straight to the complex — the campus is still 350 acres, and the walk from the station to the gate was still the walk. The same campus where the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo already runs parking-lot trams, because the distance requires them.
Five cities. Five different regional solutions, several of them excellent. One identical seam running through all of them: the place where the regional system ended and the fan's feet began.
Why this matters after the trophy is gone
It would be easy to file all of this under "World Cup problems" — a once-in-a-generation crowd, a special case, over now.
It isn't a special case. It's the same math every one of these venues faces on a normal event day, just turned up to its maximum. MetLife hosts Giants and Jets games. NRG hosts the Texans and the Rodeo. Gillette hosts the Patriots and concerts. Hard Rock hosts the Dolphins, the Miami Grand Prix, and the Orange Bowl. AT&T Stadium hosts the Cowboys and everything else Arlington can book into it.
Every one of those events ends with fans crossing the same inside mile — from the transit node, the rideshare lot, or the parking apron to the gate, and back again. The World Cup didn't create that gap. It just made it visible to the entire world at once, in July, under the brightest lights the sport has.

The regional transit plans, at their best, get people to that threshold beautifully. What happens after they arrive is a separate problem that needs its own solution.
The compliment and the opportunity are the same sentence
Here's the honest takeaway, and it's meant as praise as much as anything.
The people who ran World Cup transportation in this country did the hard part well. They moved millions of fans across long distances, on temporary systems, under global scrutiny, and the wheels stayed on. That is genuinely impressive work, and the agencies and host committees who pulled it off deserve to take a bow.
The opportunity they leave behind is the easy part — the last half-mile that no train, no charter bus, and no rideshare was ever designed to cover. The stretch where fans streamed out of their cars to walk. The stretch where even a private black car sat still for thirty minutes. The stretch that exists at every one of these venues, at every event, long after the World Cup banners come down.
The regional systems proved they can get the world to the edge of the stadium. The inside mile — the walk from that edge to the seat, and back out again — is the part still waiting for a system of its own.
The World Cup didn't expose a failure. It exposed a seam. And a seam is a much more fixable thing.
